Dell’s new server offering is the PowerEdge R510, a sleek and compact unit that fits a lot of muscle into a small space. Despite its size, the PowerEdge R510 is fast, furious and, perhaps most importantly, flexible. Dell designed it with the idea of satisfying as many different application needs as possible, from small and medium-sized businesses to large corporate environments.
This is Dell’s eleventh generation offering in the PowerEdge line, and it successfully builds upon the brand loyalty and established hardware architecture of the existing models. To help ease potential users into the new model, Dell kept all of the ports, lights and power supplies in the same location as the earlier versions. This allows IT professionals who have experience with the PowerEdge line some instant familiarity with the new product, which helps them install and support it more efficiently.
The R510 is designed to be able to support either one or two Intel Xeon processors from either the 5500 or 5600 series, and supports two-core, four-core and six-core processors from these lines, offering flexibility and a lot of computing power.
As a 2U machine, it has an overall height of 3.5 inches. It’s designed to fit well with two-post or four-post rack systems and doesn’t take up much room at just 24 inches in depth. Dell’s PowerEdge servers use “low-flow” fans which run quiet and use less energy when the server’s workload is light, and spin faster to keep everything cool when the workload gets heavy. In addition, Dell designed the R510 to maximize air flow through the unit, which can also help to keep all the equipment cooler.
The R510 offers a tremendous potential for storage. The twelve-bay chassis allows for up to a dozen 3.5-inch hard drives, and supports any combination of both SAS and SATA hard drives in a variety of cost-effective RAID configurations. This flexibility allows the R510 to offer support for a wide variety of storage needs, from databases to raw files. All twelve drive bays are hot-swappable, allowing for fast and easy configuration changes. It supports drives up to 2 terabytes in size in both SATA and SAS. The R510 server yields a total storage potential of twenty-four terabytes, or twenty-five million megabytes!
The R510 offers even more flexibility by supporting a variety of Windows and Linux operating systems. It’s an ideal platform for corporate sites, private clouds and similar applications for small and medium-sized businesses.
With the PowerEdge R510, Dell has created a compact server capable of tremendous storage and lightning-fast processing speeds.
